| itsjan's Full Review: Napster |
This is the best, fastest and easiest way to get your MP3's. That is..if it continues to be around much longer. Banning of this program borders the ridiculous. It just goes to show you that politicians and musicians know little, if anything, about the internet. The US government cannot control the passing of mp3 files on the internet. This has been going on long before anyone ever heard of Napster. If the government bans this program..what stops other people from producing one just like it!
I have been online 6 years. First there were wavs and midi files..someone was always trying to find a way to ban those. They couldn't do much about wavs, since these were only partial clips of songs. Midi sites would go down just days after they opened, only to be replaced by others.
Then along came mp3's. Way before Napster was ever available, we were able to get mp3 files by downloading them from individual's ftp sites. People would post their sites on the web or in chat rooms and you could login to their personal ftp site and download what you pleased. Often, you had to upload. Many ftp sites had ratios some were 1 to 1, meaning you could download one of theirs if you uploaded one of yours. Some were 2 to 1..you needed to send them 2 of yours to get one of theirs. It was often difficult to find someone with an ftp site with the songs you wanted. You had to try to connect, which often you couldn't, then login and hope the person had some decent songs. They offered no lists to choose from. However, this was the only way, at the time..so ya did it.
Then mIRC got into the act. Here they had mp3 chat rooms..there was even software created to allow you to shoot your song into the room and other people could take from you and you could take theirs. This was fantastic compared to the ftp. mIRC then refused to register rooms..since it was supposedly illegal to transfer mp3 files, but that didn't stop the users. There were so many people in those rooms, that the rooms didn't have to be registered. The few dozen room operators just constantly stayed connected and in the room and the mp3 transfer rooms lived on. It became so popular and so crowded that several dozen rooms appeared and even these rooms contain 50 to 100 people all transferring files. The problem with mIRC was..often you had to wait to be able to download the tune you wanted from someone that had it. Many, many times you would wait over an hour in someone's queue before the file even began to download.
THEN along came Napster. Easy to use. Loads of people with the song you want. If you can't get it from one..you can get it from another. You just log on...click the search button..type in your song or artist name and poof...a huge list appears....with all the people that have that song. You can see how fast their modem is, to help you chose from whom you would like to take your song..and in moments the song is on it's way to your hard drive. This is the best program since the mp3 was invented.
As I said before. The people that are doing the complaining have no idea that they can stop Napster...but they will NEVER stop the transferring of mp3's. Besides which..Napster isn't giving you the mp3..they are just supplying the client so individual people can share their files. You are downloading from individuals..NOT NAPSTER!!!!! The US government can't control the internet...there are too many other ways to get these files. Mp3s will be passed one way or another...even if the people go back to square one and ftp them!!
