There are a lot of different computers out there, that's obvious. Quite a few computers will do anything and everything. Play movies on DVD, play games and upload them at the speed of light, etc.
These are the computers that very few people actually need and not a whole lot of people really want (not in my experience anyway.)
Most of the consumers that I've talked with are looking for a computer to do just a few things. Surf the Internet, use email, store some files, and play the occasional game or two.
If this is all you need a computer for, then go out and get an eMachine. They're price is more than fair for what you get. A simple, easy-to-use and navigate computer that's pretty cheap to boot.
I use mine every day, and I have been for the past two or three years. I think it's just wonderful for the simplistic things that I actually do on the computer. And for how much junk I have stored in this box, it's amazing just how fast it still runs. Some call it molasses, but it's just fine for me.
I don't need to play DVD's, I have a DVD player hooked up to a TV for that, besides a DVD on a computer puts the picture way to small and you can't possibly get good sound from a computer screen. I don't need any games on here besides the occasional Scrabble or Sorry, any other games I can get for my Playstation.
But again, it's simple to use and stores well. It's small compared to other brands and the price is unbeatable.
I say go out a buy one if it's your first computer, especially if you have students out there that write a lot of papers but don't have much money. Even if you have a lot of money, do you really need the high-tech junk that you won't even use half of?
