I had heard of the AOL Instant messenger, but never intended to use it. I was quite satisfied using ICQ.
I had also tried Yahoo messenger, MSN messenger and even GoToWorld's messenger. Of course I used GoToWorlds strictly because you were paid to use it. That however is another review.
In emailing back and forth with a lady through one of my email lists, she prompted me to download the AOL Instant Messenger so that we could chat in real time.
I did so and I liked it. Since then I have added many to my buddy list and even most of the ones that I was chatting with regularly on ICQ.
The AOL Instant Messenger has caused me no problems short of a few times I have gotten a "this program has performed an illegal operation blah blah" I am pretty sure that's my computer and not their messenger.
You can send files very easily. And for me to figure out how to do this is pretty amazing. In other words, if I can do it anyone can.
You can direct connect as well, which is something that I just learned about a week ago. With the direct connect you can drag any picture or banner right into the chat box. It's so cool!
I think that my favorite feature is the voice chat(Hi Mark :) ) You do hear an echo from the side that's not wearing headphones, but I can live with that. It's just like talking on the telephone in real time.
My girls have a lot of fun using the AOL Instant messenger They love making the smiley faces and messing with the fonts and colors in their messages. In fact, they are well versed in doing both and know how to do it a lot better than I do.
I would reccomend the AOL Instant Messenger to anyone who is looking for a reliable one. You do not have to use AOL to use it which is another added plus.
The one thing that I don't like about the AOL Instant Messenger that ICQ offers is that you can not leave an offline message to someone. They have to be online to receive the message. I can deal with this, but sometimes I get impatient waiting for that person to get online when I feel that I have something important to send to them.
Time to go turn on the AOL Instant Messenger now. :)
