| augiemarch's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7500 G600VW |
The Dell Inspiron 7500 G600VW truly is a magnificent product. Recently we decided to purchase three laptops at work, so I researched reviews, listened to users' experiences and sought out the best combination of value and computer power available in a laptop. We have been Dell customers for the past five years for desktop computers, and their excellent customer service (usually delivering custom-configured desktop systems in less than a week) and responsive technical support pushed me towards the Inspiron. Of course, the rave reviews that were only bettered by my colleagues who were using this model made my mind up to order this laptop.
Being a systems analyst, though, I was skeptical. The build-up had reached a crescendo when the laptops arrived two weeks after we placed our order over the internet. The Inspiron was amazing when we first powered it up, the bright active matrix TFT 15" screen is a pleasure in itself, drawing crisp text and colorful graphics that I've never seen before on a notebook computer.
Our Inspirons are equipped as follows, all our options are standard on the Inspiron G650VW:
Pentium® III processor, 650MHz, 15" Super XGA+ TFT display
128M, SDRAM, 2 DIMMs
10GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
Removable combo 32X Max CD ROM & 3.5" Floppy drive
8MB ATI RAGE Mobility 128™ 3D Video, 2X AGP
Internal 56K5 Capable V.90 Fax Modem
Xircom Cardbus Ethernet 10/100 PC Card (A Free Promotion!)
Microsoft® Windows® Millennium (Windows Me)
Microsoft Works Suite 2000 with Money 2000 Standard
Norton Antivirus® 2000 for Windows Millennium
3 Yr Next Business Day International On-Site Parts & Labor
One of the best things about dealing with Dell is that they can custom-configure your laptop to your specifications, so that it arrives ready-to-go. A nice addition was the Xircom 10/100 ethernet PC card, which was thrown in at no cost by Dell and saved us an additional $150 per machine. My only problem with the configuration was that Microsoft Office was not an option instead of Microsoft Works. The standard 10 gig hard drive might be a bit small if this was your main computer (you'd probably want to upgrade to a larger capacity when you order), but as a secondary machine this is more than enough.
Having worked with this machine for a couple of weeks, I have to say that it's very versatile and fast. Whether I'm crunching a database, setting up spreadsheets or playing a demanding 3D game like NHL 2000 or Diablo II, it always amazes me that the power this machine packs for a reasonably low price. On the downside, it is a little heavy compared to other notebooks, but that's the price you pay for a notebook with a 15" screen.
I'd recommend this notebook to anyone looking for a medium-priced laptop for either work or home. It's powerful enough to serve as a desktop replacement for most users, and is a workhorse for a professional on the go. The machine is fast, the LCD screen is incredibly gorgeous, and the tech support from Dell (should you need it) has always been quick and knowledgeable in my experience. These are all reasons this notebook is a great buy.
