Pros: Sometimes it works
Cons: Slow response time. Then when you get thru, they never know anything.
The Bottom Line: At least once a month lately our email is down for a couple of days due to "server" problems. If you have access to a another company, go with them!

| LisaDo's Full Review: Onemain |
We signed up under a local ISP back in Nov '99 when we first got our computer. At the time, they were the only local ISP (we live in the boondocks) that we knew of at the time. Since we weren't happy with them, we were looking for a change. My husband asked around work one night and heard wonderful things about Lightspeed. We finished up our month with the old ISP and in January of 2000, signed on with the Lightspeed.
What does this have to do with anything? In February, our excellent ISP was bought out by Onemain.com. At first, it didn't bother us to much. We had never heard of them and, since we didn't have to change our email address, we didn't think to much of it. That was a mistake.
We started having problems immediately. When we would call, we were told that they were having problems merging the servers due to the take overs, but we were assured that things would be fine within 24 hours. Well, they weren't. We continued to call and complain, and they did give me a free month after about the fifth or sixth call. After about three weeks of this, things straightened out, for a couple of weeks.
Then they bought out another small, local ISP. We started having the same problems all over again. We either could not connect, we'd get bumped right away, or we just couldn't check our email in Outlook Express. We live 2500 miles from our families (one way) and this is how we communicate. When our email is down, we are left out of the loop. This can create problems. We are planning a trip home et the end of this month, but we can't get anything arranged because our email is down. Are we to cheap to use the phone, partly yes. They are three hours ahead of us and the time difference can cause problems. Plus, we have a number of people to connect with and email is easier. Plus, we pay the 21$ a month. Shouldn't we get the service?
This has been going on off and on since Onemain took over our ISP in February. Yes, we still have them. Why? Almost all of the other ISPs that have local numbers, were bought out by Onemain or are being bought out by them. Most other ISP numbers, like the "free" services are "local toll" calls. They have a per minute charge. Since we have a second phone line and we are online most of the time, I can't afford that.
As I sit and write this, I am on hold with Onemain. I have been since shortly before 6pm. It is now 6:50pm. I have not once spoken to a live person. Their phones are automated. Every 3-5 minutes I get an annoying recording thanking me for holding and telling me that they appreciate my patience, they apologize for any inconvenience this wait has caused, and they will be with me as soon as possible. I don't know which is worse. The wait or the recording.
Why am I on hold? I have not been able to send or receive email most of the day. It was sending, but the receiving was delayed. I wasn't happy, but I could deal with it. Now, it isn't doing either. This happens at least once a month, and no one down there can tell me why. Something with their servers. I get some run-around excuse, but I am convinced that they are clueless.
If you still care, they have several different prices you can go with. The difference is the amount of email accounts and the amount of free web space that you get with your account. They start at, I believe, $19.95 per month. We have the $21.95 per month account. I am also to understand that Onemain is now an Earthlink company. I am not sure when this happened, so I don't know if things are better or worse. I would stay away from Onemain, though, if possible.
