"Rather interesting remarks by Pixar's employee, Tom Buff. In railing nVidia's 'toy', he misjudged the industry's potential."

Definitely some excellent points. As self-serving as nVidia's claims may have been, I think it's safe to say that Tom Buff's were rather self serving as well, even if technically correct... Certainly it is feasible that graphics technology could become nearly indistinguishable from "Toy Story quality graphics" without actually BEING "Toy Story quality graphics".

Of course, in their defense, I think Moore's Law might be more applicable to video cards in the long run, since 3D graphics is still an emerging technology in a lot of ways. After all, they didn't even really exist until 5 years ago, so it's possible that the insane rate of advancement in 3D performance might not last indefinitely, and it might "level out" at some point.

A Note (Reply to this comment)
by KnightRT
Rather interesting remarks by Pixar's employee, Tom Buff. In railing nVidia's 'toy', he misjudged the industry's potential.

First and foremost, Buff made the assumption that the video card industry adheres to Moore's law. It does not. As a matter of fact, if Pixar were to track the peak performance of the best offerings within the video card industry in 6 month intervals, they'd find that nVidia bests Moore's prediction by a factor of 2.

Second, he assumes that in order to render Pixar-quality graphics, nVidia would have to use Pixar-style rendering methods. 96 GB of bandwidth is a ludicrous memory requirement for any computer system. nVidia will simply do what nVidia has done for the last 4 years; find a more efficient way to produce the same image. And Buff can be damn sure it won't take them 15 years.

Admittedly, this particular comment has very little to do with your review, one of the finest examples of unbiased work in all of Epinions. I do feel, however, that Pixar's arrogance should be noted.

Excellent work,

David I

i read a comment (o my god!!!) or whatever it was. the reader said it was the fastest card, 677 million texals per second (the guy said "at 677 million frames per second." thats fast...) and this was a newly posted opinion.

Finally, an objective view of the Voodoo5 5500!

Frankly, I'm sick of nVidiots bashing the card to no end and 3dfx Zombies proclaiming that the FSAA makes the card superior to all others.

I've never owned a 3dfx Voodoo5, but from what I have seen:

If you like Unreal Tournament, Voodoo5 is faster.

If you like the Quake games, GeForce GTS reigns supreme.

Hats off to you for your research. I had been pondering some of these misconceptions myself and I am glad someone cleared the smoke out there.

Interesting how the two cards using dual processors still don't perform as well as the hardware T&L in the GeForce2 huh?

Great review,

:-) Gr8ful

Excellent review. Regardless of how one feels about a product, they should rate it based on hands-on knowledge, rather than just making stuff up, as so many are prone to do.

Nice review Vic! You do know you stuff. I'm a nVidia fan really. My first real video accelerator was a TNT based Diamond. It's always worked great for the games I played and to my experience has had less of a problem with Direct3D standards than 3dfx (though I could be wrong, that was my experience). Anyhoo, keep up the great work!

Heh... well, you've got to admit they provide great entertainment value. Where else on the site do you get to see idiots make complete fools out of themselves, and not feel guilty laughing at them ;-). See the comments on some of those fake reviews and you'll see what I mean.

Epinions before product is released. (Reply to this comment)

This is TOTAL BS. I really hate when some idiot will go and post a review for a product without having ever tried it.

Look at the Playstation 2 reviews. There are so many jerk-offs in there who have never even been with 2000 miles of a Playstation 2, but are offering advice on the system. What a load.

Meanwhile, I who have actually played with a PS2, am reserving judgement, because playing with the Japanese titles means nothing if they Japanese titles don't come to the US.

Some people just make me sick. So, your review is a nice kick in the pants for all the V5 fke reviewers. Good job.

Well-Expressed Truth Presents Itself In Various Ways... (Reply to this comment)
by 29th_Candidate
I applaud your review on "Debunking Myths" (nice title!) not only for its excellent presentation and high quality writing, but because it is at least as important to write reviews which dispell falsehoods and rumors which the uninformed consumer is likely to adopt and refer to, as it is to write well-informed and well-researched reviews, calculated to bring the consumer the most accurate, and thus most beneficial information. I am glad that you added me to your WOT, or I might never have become aware of so interesting or capable a writer such as yourself.

I will certainly be scanning your profile page for future submissions; especially those of this nature, because I am one of those consumers that is frequently taken in by the market place rumors and innuendo which pervades the media channels, and which result
in unsatisfactory purchases.

More Power To You (see you on MY WOT)
and Excellent Work!

Best,

Re: The link (sorry i forgot it) (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the heads up, Turin. I heard about this today too, although it sounded almost too crazy to be true. Apparently it is true though, and lots of people are getting only about HALF the performance they should be getting. I can only imagine how many V5's are getting returned to stores, since most people probably don't know it's a driver problem.

Here's another link to a discussion thread, and an excerpt of the solution:

http://www.3dfxgamers.com/boards.asp?BOID=31&THID=54443&boardsort=lastpost&b

"After you install the Voodoo 5 5500, goto Device Manager and look at Display Adapter. notice is says 3dfx Voodoo Series driver or something along that line.... goto DRIVER and hit UPDATE.... point the install to the cdrom folder WIN9X and then DRIVER9X"

I had trouble finding the link directly off anand's page since he updated it, but i did find the linktree discussing it in Anad's forums.

One interesting thing: (Reply to this comment)
by Turin
3dfx apparently has a bug in their driver installation, which is slowing the card down.
I give it some validity considering i found out about it off a link from Anand's site.

Still for a low end to mid system, i think a gts for v5500 are both overkill, a geforce1 will probably be limited by the cpu, however the tnl might help it out, though most games don't take advantage yet of hardware tnl (or s3tc unfortunately, my pic for the best tool for visual improvement i have seen in the last few years). Then again, fsaa is kinda pointless if you are running a game in high resolution anyway.
What it comes down to is tht that gts is faster than the v5500, but if you don't ahve a really high end system you won't notice. However one thing a friend did point out is that lot of games are still resolution locked and designed to be played on lower end systems (ie Diablo2). There FSAA i feel would really shine in making diablo2 look a lot better than it would compared to a gts. The fact that it was also originally built around GLIDE makes a difference to, but considering this game was originally supposed to be finished years ago, I don't think we'll see too many games in the future built around that specific api.

lifespan in this business means nothing (Reply to this comment)
by joebrainer
You can nail Gary Tarolli's statement about hardware T&L from the other direction, as well:
Does anyone buying this level of video card really fret about its lifespan? This is the market filled with chronic overclockers that are perpetually looking ahead to the next development in framerates. Unless it were really poorly designed, a "GPU" will be obsolete long before it Transforms & Lights off.

Heh... well I happen to be one of those "nvidia buffs" myself ;-).
I honestly intended for the article to be "product agnostic", pointing out the "myths" on both sides of the V5/Geforce debate. Of course, being a V5 review I focused more on the V5 myths, although I dotend to agree that image quality is more important once you reach the insane performance levels of V5's/Geforces.

Thanks for the comment!

its amazing (Reply to this comment)
by riznick
I agree.
even if the geforce2 is faster than the voodoo5, it doesnt really matter. The speed difference will be almost unnoticable. The real factor is quality now. These cards can outperform what is currently out there, so who cares about speed. Wouldnt people rather want better looking graphics? I dont know why all the nvidia buffs are always talking about a fraction in speed difference these days.
