IBM Aptiva: Hit & Miss?
Jan 21 '00
I have an E series 570 Aptiva and its a satisfactory, if not great machine. It has an Intel Pentium II processor, 128MB RAM, 12GB hard drive, 4x DVD ROM and a 56K modem. The ONLY complaint I have about this machine is the HCF winmodem that comes in it. With a little computer savvy, and fantastic tech support from IBM, I had it working superbly in no time. Just think about it this way, people who own Compaq's end up having to PAY for their technical support past 90 days. With IBM, I got a year's worth of tech support for (somewhat) free. PLUS, IBM has installed a Java application called IBM Update Connector which checks out what model of computer you have so that it can send you new updates and drivers that will help your computer run better.
I really don't understand all of the problems that people have had with their Aptiva's. I have partitioned my drive and have run two different operating systems (Windows '98 and Linux), have installed and uninstalled peripherals (Philips 400 series CDRW, scanner, printer, Super Disk drive, insane Microsoft Professional Keyboards), and have not had ANY problems with it that weren't caused by ME. I run this machine very hard, its on at least eight hours a day, I use a ton of RAM playing games, photo and design programs, and multimedia. Like I said before, if I had problems, it was because of things I had done to the operating system, not a broken part.
I'm very happy with my Aptiva and I still think IBM put out a decent product. If you're having problems with anything you should visit their website or use the IBM Update Connector, which is a GREAT way to find out if your computer has new drivers that it needs to run more efficiently. If something isn't running right, visit IBM's website, its very easy to use and has a great FAQ section as well.
