Diablo came out a few years ago and some say it nearly single-handedly revived the Role-Playing Game (RPG) genre. With its simple interface and ease of use, it quickly became a favorite among gamers of all types. Playing Diablo is simple, if you can remember to left click on enemies to attack and left click on ground to move there you've got most of the basics already. Add in right clicking to cast a spell and remembering to set up the hotkeys (F5-F8) for spells rounds out most of what you need to know. You then proceed to the church to start fighting your way through enemies and earning experience, money and new equipment.
Diablo has a great single player game with a pretty good story line to it. You work your way gradually through all the levels, completing a few quests here and there (most of which are optional, but quite fun and helpful to complete) until you run into Diablo himself. The levels are well designed, and generated randomly. Levels look appropriate to where you are, the caves look like caves, and the hell levels look evil and creepy. The background music that plays in the hell levels will creep you out if you're playing late at night alone. I've had something fall in the other room and nearly jumped out of my seat when it did due to the eerieness created by the combination of level graphics and music.
The multi-player game starts you over (you can't import your single-player game character) but you keep earning levels and experience beyond what you earned to complete the single player game. Once you reach level 20, you can start playing multi-player games on the nightmare difficulty level, and once you reach level 30 you're let into hell difficulty level games. Each difficulty level results in the enemies getting harder to kill, but also they give more experience/gold/equipment. You're much more likely to get good equipment in a hell difficulty game than in a normal one. Your main stat seemingly never tops out, but the other three will. Multi-player allows you to play modem games, on the Internet or on a local network. You can have up to 4 players in the Internet and local network games, and only 2 in modem games.
Highs: It's simple to use, remembering to left click to move/attack and right click to cast spells is most of what you need to know to play the game. Great level graphic designs and atmosphere-creating music. Lets you keep finding better equipment as time goes on (since dungeons are stocked randomly each new game), and increase stats with levels and potions. Great fun to play alone or with a friend.
Lows: 3 of your 4 stats max out fairly early depending on character. Some weird bugs now and then (even with the patch). Accidentally killing your buddies in multi-player games is easier than it should be due to a few. (Killed a friend in one arrow shot once, even though I can't do enough damage per arrow to take out all his hit points.) Synch problems in multi-player even on a LAN sometimes. (This might be my computers, bot are older and slower.) Sometimes too addicting, you might lose a lot of sleep.
Bottom line: This is a wonderfully addicting game to set down and play. You'll find yourself saying "just one more level" often. (And of course get killed and spend the next three hours recovering your stuff.) Playing cooperative multi-player is great fun if you can communicate while playing (LAN games are best). Nothing beats clearing out an entire room quickly with some coordinated teamwork. Even though it's older and a sequel is due out soon, I doubt I'll stop playing this game anytime in the near future, it's that good! I recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in RPGs.
