Breaking the 36 gig BarrierJun 17 '00 Write an essay on this topic. How many of you have DREAMED of the 40 or 60gig HDs? Come on! I know you have. Well, Maxtor has put out a GREAT line of 40 and 60 gig HDs, but there are ALOT of things you should know BEFORE you run out and purchase. The biggest things you need to know is: Simply, your motherboard does NOT support over 36 gig. So don't expect to take this 40 or 60 gig home, chunck it in your box, turn on the system, and get rockin. This does not happen. What you can expect, is to get home, open the box, find out you need to upgrade your bios to recognize at least 36 gig drives, then you will have to use Maxtor or whatever brand you buy's software for tricking your hardware into thinking its a 36 gig drive that has 40 or 60 gigs on it. Confusing? GOOD! It should be! Granted, its a peice of cake to update your bios and to install the software needed. But there are a few other things that seem to pop up. ANY time you have to use software to do ANYTHING, you WILL have a slowdown. That doesn't mean that 7200 RPM drive you bought is going to run like an old fill size IBM clunker, but it will not be running as fast as a full hardware installed 7200 rpm drive. I had my 40 gig, which didn't seem to work right and was giving me only 32 gig, instead of the normal 38 it should have, finally died. I was able to backup my stuff on it before it died, but it went belly up. I called up Maxtor and they said they would send me a newer version of that HD, (which was faster) and would not charge me for it. So its now in my pc and working great. I still have to use thier software, but with an extra 40 gig in tow, for me its worth it. |
