ICQ.
There are several reasons that people use ICQ. A lot of people download it because "everyone is doing it"... Well, not everyone is doing it. A lot of people (I know quite a few myself) that just keep making accounts over and over in succession so they can have a good number. Do you think the person (whomever it may be) that has the ICQ number 50000000 just got lucky? No. Accounts are free, and you can have as many as you want.
Spam
Unfortunately there is a lot of spam on ICQ, especially if you have a nick like Julie. The spammers (usually porn sites) look up random names or even do the ICQ numbers in order, and instant message them. They can make an account just for this purpose. ICQ can't stop it, since making an account is annonymous and you can make as many as you want.
The Ignore feature
A lot of times, since I made the mistake of putting my ICQ number on my web site, guys write me. I get irritated at their dirty talk, and eventually put them on ignore. My fiance also has my ICQ number on his computer at his house. They can still put messages through and he will get them, even though I have the dirty talking user on ignore at my house. It causes a lot of friction to say the least!
Personally, I believe the people that use ICQ frequently are newbies to the Internet world. They are younger users that haven't chatted themselves out yet. (editors note: the first time I was on the internet chatting, I made it a whole 10 hours before falling asleep.) The ICQ users are mainly spammers, or the new chatters, OR mainly, those who know the people on their lists personally. My list consists of in real life friends, family, and a few people from work.
In short, leave ICQ off if you're not going to use it a lot. People can randomly find you, and now with over 100 000 000 users, there is an even larger chance that you will be messaged from people you have no use for.
