| mysschel's Full Review: MyPoints Connect! (by 1stUp) |
As I am trying out the free ISP's, I stumbled across MyPoints, while surfing their home page. MyPoints, for those who do not know, is a program where you earn points for reading their advertisements, visiting websites, and more. Once you earn a certain amount of points, you can cash them in for gift certificates, prizes, and more.
MyPoints offers free connection to the internet through a common ISP provider, 1st Up. 1st Up also provides for many other "free" ISP's, the advertising company just picks the program and names the ISP after their company. The only problem is since they are all basically a 1st Up connection, they all do use the same phone number.
MyPoints free ISP is a very fast download, it connects fast and almost always on the first try. One of the little things that I do not like is, sometimes, wile you are connecting they will play a video ad and you cannot get rid of it until you are fully connected. I am usually doing other work on my computer, and I just do not like having to sit there and watch this video ad, especially when I have already seen it 10 times. It is very select as to when it plays, it could be 4 times that day or 2 times a week.
MyPoints ISP does have a banner that you have on your screen while you are connected. You can move it to the bottom, top, or a certain section on your screen. It is not that big, as some free ISP's I have seen, but it can get annoying. If you do not interact with it, you will have a little box come up asking if you still want to stay on. Sometimes if you are busy, like writing an Epinion, you don't have time to interact, or you miss the pop-up window, you will be disconnected, and you will have to start the process of logging on all over again.
As with their homepage, you do earn points for using their free ISP. Although it is only 50 points for the month, if you have used it 10 hours or more. In my opinion, you are interacting with their web ads for over 10 hours, I think the reward should be more than 50 points. I have earned more in 2 hours in a month just visiting their website.
MyPoints ISP is fast, in my area there are quite a few access numbers, but I personally would not give up my provider for a free ISP. Remember you are paying for a service. On a free ISP you are making money for MyPoints, every time you click on their banner ads.
One more thing that I found with MyPoints ISP, is when you do log off, sometimes it will stay connected to the internet for about 3 minutes, not allowing you to disconnect. I have to sometimes unplug my phone line, just to disconnect, or shut down my computer.
But overall, if you are looking for a free ISP, MyPoints is at the top of my list, with all of the others powered by 1st Up. And if you are looking for a "few" extra points through MyPoints, this would be the way to get them. I have tried a few others, and will be writing an Epinion soon, once I have tried them a little longer.
Thanks for reading.
