| klmerritt's Full Review: Iowa Network Services |
I gladly left AOL to join NetINS about 5 years ago because, frankly, AOL is really awful. (I didn't enjoy paying to download graphic icons that I never used and then getting disconnected when I started to do something important.) With NetINS, it was a pleasure to have a basic, dependable connection to the internet and a place to get email that was always available when I needed it.
Basic service started at $25 but was recently lowered to $21 without even asking! This was probably due to market pressure, but I never complained about the cost because of the superior service I received and knowledgeable support that helped me when I needed it. In five years I only needed help once, and that was when I was just getting set up for the first time. I think I got a busy signal 2-3 times in five years, but I could usually connect on the second try. I could usually download at 40+ Kbps, but your mileage may vary.
The basic service also comes with 5 Meg of online storage for web pages, and a single mailbox. It's even possible to Telnet into NetINS to read your email as text only using Pine reader, or to surf text only although this is more difficult. I only used this when I needed to download a file and I couldn't get Netscape to launch due to a memory error. The point is, it was nice to have an option.
Local dial-up numbers are not available for all areas of Iowa, so this may be an issue if you don't live in a large city. This will probably change as they increase the size of their network.
I would still be with NetINS except that they experienced a delay in getting connected to the USWest Megabit DSL service in my area and USWest offered two email boxes and a consolidated bill.
In spite of jumping ship, I still don't have any complaints with NetINS except that every month I received a return envelope with my billing statement and my bill clearly indicates that I pay with an automatic debit from my checking account.
