Be Prepared

Buying a new computer for general home use is a very difficult task. No matter how hard you try, you will never get it perfect. With a little research and self-education, though, you can do okay.

First of all, you should always buy "one up". If you determine that you need a 450Mhz CPU, then you should buy a 500Mhz. If you feel that a 6.4gb hard drive is sufficient, then 8.4gb makes sense. Regarding memory, you generally can never have too much. These simple upgrades at todays prices generally will add about $100 to the price.

For most home and even all but the most demanding applications. AMD is a good choice. It outperforms the Celeron(TM) in almost all cases and costs much less than a Pentium II or III.

Whether to stick with well known name brand is less clear cut. Some clone manufacturers have excellent technical support and will build your system from top-notch components. Some name brand vendors use cheap components amd rely on name recognition for their consumer (retail) products but still make high quality commercial goods(at premium prices).

Just remember, price is not everything, and buying state-of-the-art today will be previous generation in about a month.
