Digital Lifestyle: Is It For Me?May 05 '00 (Updated May 29 '00) Write an essay on this topic. In order to maintain my friendships and my family relationships, as well as my Internet addiction, I am quickly ascertaining that I will have no choice but to equip myself with the ability to receive telephone calls while I am online. I am no doubt jealous when I hear friends talking about their high-speed Internet connections and their ability to receive phone calls while online. To first begin my research into this I used a broadband lookup service called Getspeed.com. By putting in my address and zip code I quickly had the available DSL options listed for my area, as well as the prices and the speed. I found it not to be entirely accurate after I called and checked on a couple of providers listed. I quickly learned that there are three types of providers: 1) traditional telephone companies, 2) new telephone companies that are supposed to be more competitive and, 3) ISP’s (Internet Service Providers). DSL “Digital Subscriber Line” is a technology that enables the digital lifestyle that I so desire. It was explained to me that my pre DSL days on the internet will be compared to being stuck in a traffic jam, as well as getting busy signals, waiting for pages to download, giving up my phone line, etc. Once I get DSL it will be like bypassing the traffic jam, and getting to my destination using a different road. There are four main reasons why I want and need to get DSL: DSL is fast – DSL modems are much faster than analog modems. I understand it is anywhere from twice as fast to approximately 125 times faster. DSL doesn’t tie up your phone line – DSL doesn’t interfere with phone calls, and it uses your regular phone line. What this means is that I can be on the Internet and using the phone at the same time without having to purchase a second phone line. DSL is always on – Your DSL connection is always there. There’s no need to dial up every time I want to do something online. DSL is reliable – Phone company networks are among the most reliable in the world in that they experience only minutes of downtime each year. The digital lifestyle promises to be much easier to use than the method I’m accustomed to. I can just visualize the rich content of the Internet at my fingertips, ready to be accessed with a few clicks and not waiting! Surfing the Internet will be so much more fun—graphics popping into place instead of slowly loading, high-quality video, and blazing fast downloads. The options are endless. The unfortunate thing is that I have to wait until my chosen DSL provider covers my area. I am told it will be within the next few months as they are slowly making their way across the city. I had one other option from a local ISP offering DSL, but they were very high priced. I shall anxiously wait for the other one through my telephone company. |
