An invaluable tool

Written: Feb 29 '00
Pros:test apps in an instant, easy to use
Cons:older versions doesn't seem to accept newer OSes.

The palm emulator is an invaluable tool for developers as well
as for normal palm users. You can try out the latest palm apps
in an instant before you actually install them into your palm.
It's fast (about half the speed of my PalmIIIx on a PentiumII/300),
extremely compatible (apart from hacks that access the hardware
every piece of software I've ever tried ran flawlessly), and
very easy to use. I guess I don't need to recommend it to developers -
testing your software without it is close to impossible.

The emulator is available for Windows and Mac. I've installed
to Windows NT without problems.

Please note that

a) the Emulator is useless without an actual palm: before using
it you have to sync the actual OS stored on your palm's
ROM into an image on your PC.
b) there are several versions of the Emulator, some of which may
not work with all Palms. I've had no success using an older
version with my Palm IIIx (didn't recognize my OS). Version
3.0a3 works fine.
