| wjgraham's Full Review: Micron Millenia MAX Series |
I recently purchased a 993MHz Millenia Max and am very happy with it. I work in computers and spent a lot of time researching exactly what I wanted and what it would cost at each of the major computer manufacturers. My only previous experience with them was that I bought some memory from their crucial.com website to upgrade my old computer, and was happy with the service then.
I will quickly list the specs and features I got: 256 MRAM, both DVD and CD RW drive, 30 Gig hard drive (7200 ATA 100) 56K PCI modem and 10/100 broadband ready ethernet card, SoundBlaster Live! sound card, NVDIA 64MB DDR 256 Geforce video card, 21-inch monitor, Logitech scrolling mouse, Altec Lansing ATP3 speakers, with Windows ME and Microsoft Office 2000 small business.
Everything is working great and it is very fast, especially with the graphics. An example is that it took my old (Pentium 133 Mhz) about 1 hour to defrag my 2.1 Gig hard drive, and this takes about 10 minutes to do 30 Gigs. I did have a problem with my Logitech scrolling mouse breaking, and they sent me another on in two days with no problem or charge. I did everything online , and it was built, shipped, and received in about 8 days. They also offered a 6 months same as cash deal ( which I am almost done paying off before my 6 months are up).
Although I know this is more power than your average person needs, many of the other major manufacturers could not even supply me with these same specifications. I was really leaning towards ordering with Dell, but the difference was $3,800 with Dell vs. $3,057 (including tax and shipping)with Micron.
The other advantage over the others was future upgrades. With the Micron, I have 3 slots, in which you can put 256 MRAM each for a total of 768 MRAM. With Dell there were only two slots available for 256MRAM max, for a total of 512 MRAM. Also, Micron let me order with only one DIMM of 256 MRAM, so all I need to do is order 256 MRAM at a time and pop it in. Dell would only sell me 2 - 128 MRAM, meaning I would need to order 256 MRAM modules and take out and throw away the 128's each time I upgraded.
I have a mysmart pad, scanner, and inkjet printer hooked up to it. I also hook up my digital camcorder and Sharp mobilon handheld to it. The one drawback was (at least at the time) they did not offer the option of a firewire PCI card, so I had to order and install one myself (for about $50). My main regret is not getting enough hard drive space. I thought 30 Gigs would be plenty, but found out once you start to use it for digital video editing, 1 hour of digital video takes up 12 Gigs of space, and then you need the same amount (for a total of 24 Gigs) to edit it. Luckily their is room to simply pop another hard drive in when I really need it to add to my storage space, without have to take out the old one.
