If you played Command and Conquer when it first came out some years ago, you and I both know that it was an absolute blast to play. To say that that game took away hours from my life would be an understatement...Command and Conquer offered decent graphics, balanced and interesting gameplay, and a somewhat intriguing storyline about GDI and Nod, two opposing armies fighting for global domination (this storyline should sound a little familiar by now)
After finishing the game, I was left in anticipation of a sequel. A couple years later, a quasi-sequel was introduced, a la Red Alert. Suddenly the conflict was between the Soviets and the Germans, but eh, who noticed anyway? I was expecting a lot more, but Red Alert was still a blast to play. But, when would the REAL sequel grace my computer screen??
Well, that time is now, and I have never been so disappointed with anything since The Phantom Menace. Let me first point out that the gameplay hasn't changed much. The storyline for some reason has gotten worse, with mutants making an appearance into the game. The graphics too make one wonder what Westwood did with all those years they put into this game. Some of the new elements introduced, such as facility upgrades & gates, do add to the strategic realm of this game. Command and Conquer : Tiberian Sun also introduces new, futuristic units, like Disk Throwers and Cyborgs..ooh!
But, despite all the new tweaks they added (for example, the 3-dimensional pixel) they do not redeem this game at all. After the initial excitement faded away, I realized that Blizzard's Starcraft was a much superior product than this...thing that Westwood decided to offer the public. Do not get me wrong, Tiberian Sun is a decent and engaging game, and playing it will take away time from your job, family and friends... but after a while (like 2 hours) you'll just shake your head and wonder, What Happened?
Command and Conquer : Tiberian Sun is a very competent product, but it is disappointing to many hardcore Westwood fans. It suffered from several delays and from the hype. In any case, I hope that C&C's diehard (remaining) fans will give Westwood another chance to make up for this calamity.
