proth's Full Review: Final Fantasy Tactics for PlayStation 1
Ahh, Final Fantasy Tactics. One of my favorite Final Fantasies, and thus one of my favorite games ever.
This game has got great graphics. Rather than being like FF VII (pre-rendered backgrounds, 3D characters, yuck), there are 3D worlds (that look 2D-ish) with sprites as the characters. It's 2D turned 3D done right!
The huge thing that drew me to this game, however, was the battles. They're just amazingly fun to play! Though things take a set time to happen, you don’t play in real-time, nor exactly turn-based. When it’s a character’s (or enemy’s) turn to move, they get to move someplace on the map, how far depending on their Move stat. Then they can do an action. Much more involved than other Final Fantasies, but without the rush of getting things done NOW as in a game like Starcraft. This game could just be a series of battles you play with nothing else, and I think it'd still be fun just for that. Tetris doesn't have a story and it's a great game, this game could be the same way. Except...
It DOES have a great story! But it is quite complicated, and with many characters, and thus can get confusing. Luckily the game has a few features most games don't have (but should). For one, the Brave Story. It lets you look at a list of characters and read information about them. It also lets you read about (and replay) scenes that have happened. It also lets you check out pictures and info on treasures and lands you find as you go along, many of which are related to other Final Fantasy games, so a bonus if you’re a fan of them!
Another thing it has that most games don’t is the Tutorial, where it teaches you things about the game, and yeah, it’s probable that learning the workings of the game (be it how the battles go or how the Job/Ability system functions) will take a bit of getting used to. Unfortunately, the Tutorial can sometimes be more confusing than helpful. Why is this? Well, if this game has anything, it’s an AWFUL translation, so things that should make sense don't. I once saw a list of some of the mistranslated things. One of my favorite ones was a move that in the English version is called “Wiznaibus”. It should be “With Knives”. The bad translation does add a bit of fun to the game as long as it’s not totally confusing you at the moment. The title of this opinion is a line from the game. :)
As far as music goes, this game’s is pretty good. Some musics really help the feel of the battles, be they action-packed, or more complex ones used in really important battles. This is one area where the FF influence doesn’t really show through, though. The only thing you’ll find is a very few songs where you’ll catch a snippet of the FF Prelude being used.
Great gameplay, great story, good gosh, let’s eat!
