| SeanK's Full Review: JPS |
I have to agree with my fellow reviewers about JPS.net. In a nutshell, they used to be a great ISP but their reliability has dropped considerably in the last year or so.
I signed on to JPS because I wanted an ISP that provided local coverage over a wide area--the Oakland/Sacramento area of Northern California. JPS offered that coverage, plus three e-mail addresses, a nice amount of web space, and low annual rates ($89 a year when I signed on). For a while, JPS's reliability was rock solid. Fast and solid connections with few or no busy signals. I was very pleased.
Then that changed. I wonder if their fast growth has something to do with that change. Now, when I log in, I sometimes find that the connection is slower than my modem speed, or that the connection doesn't work at all--my browser unable to make DNS connections or every entry in my bookmark file timing out. The mail server is spotty, working 75 to 80 percent of the time. Sometimes, when this happens, I find I can fix it by logging out and logging back in again. It works, but it's a hassle that I shouldn't have to deal with. And lately, my connection itself to JPS has become unreliable, dropping at unexpected times, forcing me to reconnect.
In JPS's defense, their technical support has been excellent and whenever I have to call, they solve my problems quickly and efficiently. The problem is the long waits on hold waiting for that support. Once, one of the support people not only solved my problem but helped me change my Window's settings to make connecting to JPS easier. Now if only I could connect to the Internet reliably and speedily.
