Gateway desktops are a safe bet
Dec 18 '00
I own a Gateway 2000, 333 mhz, 128 ram, 9 gig, pII desktop. I purchased it in the summer of '98 and still use it as my main computing device. I also own a Gateway 486 which has been running for about 10 years (or how ever long they've been around; it was a hand-me-down).
Anyhow, I am very pleased with my computer. It runs smoothly and efficiently while enabling me to do all the things I enjoy doing without any problems (games, web design, papers). It has crashed pretty bad a couple of times (my fault, I didn't update the virus scanning software and therefore caught one) but technical support was helpful in taking me through the steps whenever a problem arose. Note: Like most services, it took me about 10-20 minutes on average to connect to tech support.
The 486 is also very dependable, even if it is only good for typing stuff up.
My sister, on the other hand, owns a Gateway laptop. The thing runs like a piece of garbage. There is a loud buzzing noise constantly humming in the background whenever it is turned on that she has apparently gotten used to. However, I'm not sure whether it's because she doesn't take good care of it or if it's because Gateway laptops are poorly built. Keep in mind, laptops are generally more prone to hardware problems than desktops because of their fragile state (Hence the reason why not all computers are laptops). However, whenever she has had software problems, she has had no trouble contacting technical support to help guide her through.
I would recommend Gateway over Dell any day. My friend recently bought a top of the line Dell that crashed hard and lost all of his data. Apparently, he was playing a game and the computer froze up. At this point he pressed the power button on the front of the computer and he lost all of the files on his hard drive. I don't know about anyone else, but I have pressed the power button on the front of my computer many times to shut it off and I've never had any problems.
Take all of what I said with a grain of salt. Everyone has had a different experience with their computer that can create a wide variety of opinions. Choose wisely; a computer is a hefty investment that can last you a long time if picked correctly.
