I learned from a friend who went to sign up with Worldshare, that it will cost him $15 a year and they wanted his credit card number. This is disappointing to me, but there will still be no banners and they have quite a home page. One of their Christmas in July gifts was free web-based email, which I haven't tried since I'm happy with my Care2.com service and Hotmail can be tolerated. Another gift was fifty dollars in postage. Check them out.
I received a major announcement from the CEO and CTO of Worldshare.com (or .net) on July 18th. The survey I (as an original member) have had to fill out every month for them to provide their free dial-up, bannerless service has been discontinued because they are no longer necessary. I quote:
WE'LL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THE BEST FREE INTERNET
SERVICE WITH EXPANDED COVERAGE!
WE'RE NOT BEING BOUGHT OUT BY ANY OTHER ISP!
WE CAN NOW GIVE YOU TOTALLY UNLIMITED ACCESS!
WE'RE WELL-FUNDED, WELL-FOUNDED, AND NOTHING IS GOING
TO KEEP US FROM OUR PERSONAL MISSION OF DONATING
$1,000,000 TO CHARITY IN ONE YEAR!
ITS CHRISTMAS IN JULY AT WORLDSHARE, READ ON!
I found it rather amusing that they joked of being accused of sending spam and so they gave those members over to Juno. Hahaha! I betcha they read my review of trying to use Juno when I was having access problems with them. Note: they do not send spam and my access problem was resolved with calling the corporate office. If you want more, but slightly outdated, information on what this ISP is about, please read my earlier (6/24) review. This is only an update!
With the decision to require a minimal payment for new members, I am not affected and continue the service for free. The twelve days of Christmas are over and it was nice.
What did they give away?
The First Day of their Christmas celebration gave us $50 (count 'em) when we sign up with Compubank.com. Tim was right to rave about it. He called their customer service at midnight and waited five seconds for help, which she did. I signed up with them, of course! Unfortunately the offer of thirty dollars from Worldshare is over now, but you will still receive twenty from CompuBank when you sign up.
The Second Day of their Christmas gave us 65% off of our travel plans through travelnow.com. Another day was free disk space. Another was more access numbers, which didn't affect me. I think their best gift was the first one.
My Recommendations
If you are a member who has been answering monthly surveys, great news! Go to the Worldshare page and take advantage of any presents still being offered. If you are not a member, I know it's disappointing it's not free anymore, but probably no one was committing to be a volunteer, anyway. Worldshare will still be helping our favorite charities with your money, though. I think that, and their excellent service, is to be commended. Don't you?
If you don't have a favorite charity, there are lots of them to choose from!
