Well, I had my doubts about the quality of the monitor and the company after my K7 failed after only 5 months of use. It started out pretty good, although when I turned it on for the first time, I could immediately detect the inferior image quality as compared to the diminutive 14" Apple monitor it was replacing (with SONY Trinitron Tube). The screen looked a little fuzzier and the text was not as crisp - and with only a 0.28 dot pitch, that's what you'd figure. But hey, what do you expect for a new 17" monitor for $169? They even sent a free Mac adapter which worked without any configuration problems.
On-screen Controls
I found the on-screen controls relatively easy to use and seemed to offer a great deal of configurability including the standard brightness, contrast, and de-gauss functionality as well as pin cushion, trapazoidal, moire, horitontal, vertical, and rotational controls. I found the controls were even better than the typical DELL on-screen controls I've used.
Then, the unexpected...
After about 5 months of daily use, the monitor simply didn't come on one day when I started my Mac. I did all the obvious checking of the power cords, switches, and other connections - but nothing. I realized that it was probably related to a power unit failure when I smelled something burning. After contacting the customer service representatives via email I received a terse, auto-generated reply which instructed me to call the customer service hotline.
I did call and after speaking with a couple of different people about the problem I was having, they arranged for an RMA number and I prepared to ship it out to them at my expense. Little did I know that it would cost $57 to ship it out to the west coast (after all, it weighs about 40 lbs.). I complained about the shipping charges, especially in light of the fact that I had only had the monitor for a short time. A very generous customer service representative sent me a $50 mail-in rebate. Even though it had expired, she said that she could "take care of it for me."
So while I am somewhat discouraged by the slightly inferior image quality and that I'm on my second K7 monitor in 6 months, the commitment to helping me out by the customer service representative would probably make me look to Kleer again in the future. The other bit of piece of mind is that there is still a 5-year warranty on the monitor that I have now. Give Kleer a try if your just looking for a cheap 17" monitor to get you that extra desktop real estate.
