This epinion will point out two important errors, and talk about the FreeAtLast.com service.
Many people that are into the free ISP world know that FreeAtLast.com is not free anymore. Here is a question that I am thinking. When Epinions.com picked someone to be in charge of the Free National ISPs section, did they have to know about free ISPs, or just rely on other people to someday point out the errors? That question seems to be bothering me. FreeAtLast.com is no longer free, and so are some other sub-categories in the Free National ISP Section. Epinions.com should at least put a (DEAD) in parentheses or something, since I understand they do not want all of the 1000s of epinions in that category to die.
The second error is made by FreeAtLast.com itself. They used to offer free Internet access and free email. Well know they charge $10 a month. $10 a month is quite cheap for an ISP, but still isn't free. Then why does FreeAtLast.com still call themselves "FreeAtLast?" They are not free anymore surely not Free At Last. Are they too poor to afford themselves a second domain name? Unlikely, but then why not change their name?
Now a little about the former FreeAtLast.com service itself. Well the service itself used to be good. It did not exactly have an ad bar, but it did have ads. It had a non-annoying pop-up every 20-30 minutes with an ad. You can close it without getting disconnected. On the subject of disconnecting, that is not a familiar word with the FreeAtLast service. FreeAtLast does not disconnect you very often. It does, but not like most ISPs.
I have used this service for a little less then a month when it was free. I was quite satisfied with it, and very sad to see it go. At least, FreeAtLast did a decent thing. They warned their users and told them they can continue using the FreeAtLast service for 30 days for free. Then, they would start charging $10 a month.
There is one other service like FreeAtLast still active today (or at the time I am writing this epinion; Dec. 04, 2000). The service is called Blue Frog Internet. It has no ads at all, but works on monthly surveys and email.
I was sad to see FreeAtLast go, but I guess they couldn't afford to keep offering free Internet access. That is what happens to ISPs that sound just too good.
