| MagnumXL2's Full Review: Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32 |
I started my search for CDRW drives a few months ago, I had settled upon a different drive, then i came across the Plextor Plexwriter 12/10/32. I saw the specs on this drive and knew i had to have it, and the price was right.
The key feature to this drive is called Burn-Proof. It is a new technology that makes it so that you cannot make what is called a coaster. A coaster, or drink coaster, happens when there is not enough data to write to the CD. This happens when either your hard drive is not fast enough for the drive, or it stops sending information to the drive because another program is using the hard drive. In the past, that mean that you should only use the CDR/W when you have no other programs running, or you would make too many "coasters", well thats not the case anymore.
This drive is nearly perfect. I haven't made a single coaster in the entire time that i have had the drive, several months. I've probably made over 100 CD's with it, and it is worth every penny! There are so many things that you can do with a CDRW drive, from creating custom audio CD's, backing up data, or making backups of other CD's that you have purchased (or not purchased, either way :))
This drive is very fast! 12x burning is great, you can make a full CD in under 6 minutes. Making CDRW's is very fast too, for this is one of the few drives that offer 10x rewriting. It also performs relativly well as a regular CD drive. At 32x, its not extremely fast, but is wonderful for ripping MP3's. Many have said that the plextor drives are the best for ripping, or making mp3's off of CDs that you have, out of all CD or CDRW drives.
Installation of this drive was relativly easy for me, because I have installed several drives before. If you are new to computers or have never installed a drive before, it is probably a good idea to have a friend that knows what he is doing come over and install it for you and teach you how to do it. Mainly, the process includes opening the case, screwing it in an open bay in your case, then plugging the IDE and power cables into the back of the drive.
The software included is pretty good. It includes both Adaptec EZ CD Creater, and Adaptec Direct CD. Both are easy to use and have many features, including the options to make Audio CD's, Data CD's, and others like Video CD's.
CDR's are great for both experienced users and new users, both will find uses for them. If its not making your own custom CD's, you will be backing up your important data. The uses are limitless!
If you are looking for a CDRW drive, look no further!
