townsend7's Full Review: Handspring Visor Edge Handheld
Several months ago I suggested to my ever-organized wife that she get a Palm organizer. Two reasons: First she always loves anything that allows her to be more organized. Second I get to check out a new electronic gadget (I'm not very organized but toys are cool!)
After looking at what seemed like one of every handheld computer ever made she settled on a Palm V. To make a long story short, she loved it and I thought it was pretty cool too.
Fast-forward a few months and I decided that I need to get my life more organized. I was planning to buy a Palm III since it did everything the V does at a significantly lower cost, the smaller size didn't matter to me all that much. My plan was thrown into disarray when Palm introduced the M100. The M100 looked to me to be a Palm III with the size of a Palm V and a noticeably smaller screen. A smaller screen just wouldn't do so suddenly the Visor climbed to the top of my list.
Now that I've had a chance to sample both the Palm V and the Visor I can make some educated comparisons.
Size: The Palm V wins hands down, it's quite a bit thinner and a nit smaller in every other dimension. If you must have a PDA that fits in your shirt pocket you may want to consider the Palm V over the Visor.
Quality of Materials: Another area where the Palm V wins. The overall look and feel of the V is hard to beat, metal case versus plastic, the fit in the cradle, the Palm just feels more expensive. Of course the Palm is more expensive. No to say that the Visor is poorly made, it's not but the Palm gives the first impression that it's a higher quality piece.
Expandability: Springboard!!! Visor wins this contest with their ingenious Springboard modules. This is an awesome feature, sooner or later someone is going to develop a "killer app" module and Palm may be in big trouble when they do. If expandability is important to you buy the Visor. A two meg machine is fine for most users, why pay for eight meg if you don't need it. Two meg not enough? Plug in an $80 eight meg module and viola, you're good to go.
The bottom line is that the Visor is identical to the Palm V when it comes to functionality and far ahead in expandability. The V is a fine machine, very high quality but the Visor is the better value in my opinion.
I assure you, no matter which you choose you'll be more organized and less stressed.
