Free Lycos.com ISP
In a previous opinion I wrote about how to find a free ISP. Since that time I have tried FreeLane by Excite, Worldspy (which is now owned by Juno) and Lycos.com. I have found some nice advantages to the Lycos.com ISP service.
Lycos (like many other free ISP’s) is powered by the 1st up.com service. When using this service you agree to have an ad banner displayed somewhere on your screen in exchange for free ISP. The ad banner takes up an area, which can be at the top, bottom, or side of your screen. It then displays various flashing ads in this area while your browser is displayed in the remaining area. I have grown accustom to the banner at the top of my screen and barely notice it. I surf away on IE 5 and generally have a connection speed of around 50-56k.
Most recently I used FreeLane by excite and have some notable comparisons. 1stup.com powers both services. However, FreeLane will “boot” you off if you don’t click on one of their ads during your session. Lycos does not do this to you - as often. In fact it wasn’t until I was writing this opinion that I first was prompted to ‘click on the above banner in order to prevent your session form being terminated’. I found also that varying the dial up numbers for Lycos gives me a much more consistent high connection speed.
Using the free benefits that accompany the service on Lycos is easy (see lycos.com for more detail). I have begun to use that email account over other free ones due to it’s easy layout, quick startup and it’s additional free features (i.e. voicemail etc).
In closing free ISP’s save money and I Like Lycos. I’d love to hear what you think too. Happy surfing.
