After months of research, I decided to take the plunge and update my home built computer with a name brand version. I checked out Gateway, IBM, HP, Compaq and DELL, all on-line. I then went out and looked at the different computers at my local stores followed up with a discussion with my IT person at work who installs and services the computers for my employer.
Once all of this was done, I selected the Dell computer for my needs.
I then went on-line and selected the computer that I wanted, customized it to fit my needs and ordered the computer. Up to this point, I was very impressed with Dells web site and the whole on-line process. Now the nightmare begins. I first ordered the computer on November 9, 1999. Using Dell's order watch, I start to monitor the process, after one week, my order number went dead. I called Dell and I was given a new order number, this time the order date changed from 11/9 to 11/11, not a big problem as the delivery date stayed the same. As the delivery date came, my order disappeared again. Once again I call, once again I now have a new order number, the new number now has a 11/30-order date and a ship date of 12/13. On 12/9 I start calling and emailing my Dell contact requesting information on the system and how could I update the shipping. Dell never returned my calls or emails. Final on 12/20 I called Dell, escalating my problem to a management level. Once I had a manager, the system was released and shipped overnight with the computer arriving on 12/21/1999.
Now some particulars of the who, what, when and why I wanted this system. I'm involved with sprint car racing and we recently changed to a digital video camera with firewire. The first time I tried to use my old 233Mhz computer, it failed. The Dell system handles the digital video download and editing extremely well allowing me to edit the raw tape and send out video clips to our sponsors and fans alike. This computer has two parallel ports, one serial, two USB, and three firewire (IEEE 1394) ports all working with no problems handling a laser printer, a color printer a PCMCI card reader for our digital camera, while downloading the digital video and playing a movie on the DVD player.
The computer is great working as advertised. I restored all of my data files and imported all of my email and Internet options with no problems. The system is quiet, fast and exceeds my expectations. If it hadn't been for the problem with the disappearing orders, I would be extremely happy with the whole process. I recommend the system, but good luck on ordering it.
