| stoats's Full Review: Firetalk |
This should be a basic internet telephony/communications program. It is, after all, free. I have now suffered through several 'updates' and improvements, and it all essentially bites. The premise is wonderful... chat, voice mail, and text mail your friends, globally, via a slick gui that occasionally works. Pretty cool. Now add the supposed ability to 'real time' chat with like-kind individuals on any given web page as long as you enter through the Firetalk portal... mega cool.
Truth of the matter is, the gui locks up, the Im and voice mail take days to connect, and often lose all content, and the telephony is 50% discernable at best. With top notch connections at both ends, my UK partner and I can't hear squat... hardly a phone substitute.
Domestically, life is hardly better.
Grumpily, the supposed real time chat is valid only in MS IE. Oh, well, I'll allow it on my system for test purposes...
When I do, 1 out of 6 supposedly recognizable pages allowed for viable chat. Hardly a validation of the technology.
My vote is to keep an eye on these folks, because I think they may stumble on to the correct mix of advertisement and technology to make something work, but it sure as hell isn't what they have as of today.
