Fed Up With CyberMax
Aug 30 '00
Don't waste your time with this company. I purchased a CyberMax computer in June 1998 through an ad in Computer Shopper. The system came with a three year warranty for parts, which is still in effect. On July 14, 2000, this system failed. I began calling CyberMax tech support that day and by the time I gave up on August 11, 2000, I had logged over 20 hours on hold with this company. Nobody ever picked up the phone. I called every number I could find, for any and all departments at CyberMax. Nothing. I sent numerous emails to tech support, customer service, customer feedback, sales, marketing. Nada. I tried to send several faxes - the one to customer service was the only one to get through. When I tried to send another to the same fax number the next day, all I got was a "No connection" error message. In absolute rage and desperation, I emailed PC World Magazine, wondering if they could help in some way.
I got a call from an editor at the magazine who told me that CyberMax was owned by Fountain Technologies, and that Fountain had just filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. (Check the PC World website for their article about CyberMax and Quantex Computers.) I took the machine to a local computer shop, where it was determined that the motherboard and the memory were defective. I have also filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau in New Jersey and with the Attorneys General of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I'm sure I'll never get any financial settlement from this company, so I'm out the three or four hundred bucks it'll cost to get the thing fixed. Next time I'll build it myself.
