I started using Napster about a year ago and I have successfully downloaded over 200 songs at no charge! It is absolutely free! Napster is a program that allows anyone with an Internet connection to download and share music with other users. Every possible genre of music can be found on the Napster system. Napster is great and I hope that everyone gets the chance to use it before it is shut down!
Is it hard to download the Napster?
The installation of Napster is extremely easy. Anyone can do it. There are just a few steps and then you are off to the music world.
*First, you go to http://www.napster.com
*Click on the download button.
*And, finally, answer a few not-so-personal questions and choose user-name.
That’s It! Now you can start this wonderful program!
What are the Features and Options that Napster Offers?
Chat -- You can chat to other Napster users while you are downloading songs. The chat is an IRC-based chat and allows you to enter IRC channels. I have been to the chat a few times and it is a nice feature. The chat system works fast, but there are usually not many chatters.
Library -- That’s right, you have your own library. Each time that you download a song, the song is sent to your library. There you can view every song that you have downloaded. You can also manage your files in this window by adding songs to your playlist. Since there has been so much controversy with Napster lately, I would recommend using the playlist feature. This allows you to save the list onto your hard-drive. Many users that had downloaded songs from Metallica were banned access from Napster forever. That means that they were unable to access their private library. The smart users saved their library to their own hard-drive, and now they are still able to listen to their music. Most people use http://www.winamp.com to play their music! It is a great program as well!
Search -- This is where you can find any song that you want. You have the choice of putting in the Artist name or the title of the song, or you can put in both. If your search produced a lot, it will show you the first 100 matches. You will usually be able to find what you are looking for in the first 100 matches. An advanced search allows you to choose the bitrate, the connection speed, and the ping time that you want to be shown. The only one that I usually use is the connection speed. I have found that the speed that downloads the fastest is DSL!
Hotlist -- This is where you can add your favorite users. It will show you when they are online, just like instant messenger programs. The only difference is that you cannot talk to the person. However, when you know that someone is online, you can then download songs with them.
Transfer -- This feature shows you the songs that you are downloading. It will be able to tell you how long it will take the peculiar song to download. You can also few the individuals that are downloading songs from you.
Discover -- This will allow you to search again. The only difference is that it will allow you to search through Napster’s database of new artists. The category that you use here to search is genre.
This sounds too good to be true
Everything that I have told you is true. Nevertheless, Napster does come with its problems. If you do not have a fast connection to the Internet, it can take hours to download a three-minute song. Another problem that occurs a lot is that people sign off while you are downloading song from you. Even if you only have a minute to go before the song is done downloading, it will not download completely. You will have some of the song, but not the entire song. Some professional musicians, like Metallica, do not like what Napster is doing. Metallica is taking Napster to court to stop Napster. They do not like the fact that we can hear their music for free. So, if you download a song from a person that is against Napster, you will probably be banned from Napster forever. Oh, and you cannot just create a new user name. They go by I.P. address.
My Overall View of Napster
I love Napster dearly and I hope that it does not shut down. I am able to download songs for free and see if I like them. The program does come with its problems, but these problems are nothing compared to the great music that you eventually receive. I really recommend this service to the “poor college student.” I am there with you. I am going to school and I never have any money. This is a great place to hear my favorite songs! My advice to everyone is to download Napster before it might be taken away!!
