Many months ago, I heard about this new portable, lightweight word processing machine called an AlphaSmart. Writers on a discussion list were raving about it. I had to check it out since I was already in the market for a laptop.
Upon visiting the site - http://www.alphasmart.com - I learned that they offer a loaner program. That is, you can make a request to review the AlphaSmart for two weeks for free. It gives you the chance to see if this might be something you could use or if you should pass. The only cost to you - the return shipping and handling (approx. $6).
With a quick fax sent, I was on my way to experiencing life without having to sit at my desk to write. It arrived via FedEx in just a few short days and I was impressed. I wrote several articles while watching my favorite shows on TV. But when I went to download to my computer, nothing would happen. I agonized for days trying to make it work before I gave up. I was simply not happy.
However, the raves kept going around. The AlphaSmart was to be had by any and all writers who could not afford a laptop. I continued to watch the developments from afar. In the meantime, I wound up buying a full fledged laptop since I needed a whole computer that I could work on anywhere (see my Dell Laptop review).
As time passed, my oldest son expressed an interest in getting his own AlphaSmart. At the cost of $200, I wasn't sure we could swing it for Christmas. In fact, when it came down to it, there was no way. We began thinking of his birthday which is still six months away. At the same time, his grandmother asked me what he wanted and I told her the only thing he wanted - the AlphaSmart. Much to my surprise, she bought it and on Christmas Day, my son was more than overjoyed when he opened it.
Not one to waste any time, my son turned it on immediately. The AlphaSmarts arrive already ready to go, batteries and all. Included is a nice long booklet but the unit is actually very self-explanatory. Turn it on, find a file, turn it off.
The best feature about the AlphaSmart is the fact that whatever you type is automatically saved. There's no special SAVE button. Just type, move on to a new file, or simply turn it off. Unlike a computer, there's no special shutdown procedure. Just On/Off.
With the capability of holding eight separate files, I don't have to worry about my son coming to me too often to send the files to my computer. Since I am always paranoid about anyone else touching my laptop and desk top computers, this is the best thing that could happen to both of us. And sending the files is a major SNAP! Apparently the unit I had on loan had a defect because this new one sent the files zippity-quick. It was like watching a ghost typing on the computer.
The keyboard on the unit features everything a regular one does with the exception of the Function Keys on top and the number pad to the right. Otherwise, everything you need is right at hand.
One small con I have heard others complain about is that fact that only four lines are visible at a time. But at only 2 pounds, and for the price in comparison to a laptop, if you're just looking to do some writing, this AlphaSmart is perfect!
My son's unit (which is a nice shade of dark green) came with the cord to hook to larger computers, a carrying case (though an extra $20 she spent - I wouldn't have), a teacher's guide (since I believe these were initially made for classrooms), a USB cable (for the connection between unit and computer), and a very thick User Manual which features all that the unit can do. Add to all of that the fact that it is highly durable and you've got a winning new writing machine.
Re-cap:
* Lightweight
* Inexpensive in comparison to computers
* Great for the whole family
* Easy to use ANYWHERE
* Ready for use upon arrival
* Once attached, unit can also be a lightweight lap keyboard to your computer, too!
This makes a great gift any time of the year for writers, young children, homeschoolers, and more! Use it on the go or comfortably in bed. It's a buying decision you won't regret.
Have to run and send this to my computer now before my son gets home from school and catches me with it again. Last time all I heard was "But mom, it's MY AlphaSmart!"
