As a paid websurfer and internet writer, I need serious CPU and serious internet access. My Christmas present to myself this year was a new Mac. The iMac DVD SE was the only sensible choice.
The iMac line is already a classic, and the DVD SE is the top of the line. For under $2000 it is possible to get a complete system (at many retailers) that even includes a color printer. Its speed (400mhz), memory (128 megs), disk size (13gig), ease of use, and price ($1499) make it the best value in a personal computer, and it will probably stay the best value for some time.
However, there are a couple of things I would change about this otherwise beautiful machine.
The keyboard, for example. I added the Macally iKey extended keyboard, which is MUCH better. Now what am I gonna do with the tiny, chintzy Apple keyboard that came with the iMac? It's too small to make a good doorstop, and too weird for a paperweight.
And then there's that AWFUL, round Apple mouse. For the first time ever, I can honestly say that I hate an Apple product. That tiny round mouse sucks. But I added the Contour Design iMac stand (a nice plastic doodad that elevates the screen and angles it better for desktop viewing) and with the stand came a cool plastic thing that surrounds the awful Apple mouse. Now I have a nice big mouse and it's easy to tell which way is up.
Complaints aside, I do love this new computer. The darn thing keeps amazing me with how fast it is. God it's nice not to have to wait for every little operation. I open a window and it's open, presto. Zowie!
Don't even think of getting a PC clone. Go take a test spin with the iMac DVD SE. Let yourself be seduced!
