Quality shows even in their low-end models.

I have owned two IBM thinkpads to date. The first one I owned was a 380CD series, and last year I purchased a i Series 1411 right after they came out. I must say that while many other pc notebooks look nice, the IBM i Series 14xx really stands out.
Some of the top points are: a fair active matrix lcd screen, IBM's wonderfully done keyboard, and if you are like me, I really enjoy the J-stick pointer device. The machine was fair on speed, not to the point of winning any races, but it would hold it's own pretty well. The machine has fair heat dispensation, but still when running from the battery, you don't want it on your bare lap.
One of the features that I both liked and disliked was that of the front located CD controls. While it is nice to be able to listen to a cd with the system turned off, or eject a CD without having to bootup the machine, the locations of the panel on a few occassions was prone to accidental activation. I found out quickly that usually that resulted in lockups.
Though like most laptops, the software bundle lacked a lot to be desired. The only software of value that it came with was Lotus SmartSuite, but most people do not use SmartSuite and will opt to not remove the installation.
Key features: Nice screen, low cost, fair on speed, duel pc-card slots, internal 56k modem, normal ports.
