This is the sweetest burner out on the market right now. This puppy can burn a CD from your hard drive in a little over 7 minutes. 7 minutes!! That's insane! We'd been mired around in a land of 2 and 4 speed for a while, but Plextor outdoes even itself with this new 12 speed burner, and it's reliable.
The most common problem with burning CDs today is getting buffer underruns. What this means is that the CD Burner's source cannot keep the file transfers going fast enough to give the Burner enough information to keep burning. (The burner can't stop at any point or it'll toast the CD.) Plextor uses a new technology called BURN-Proof which claims to stop buffer underruns. I haven't had one burn fail yet, which is a good thing. However, if you ever do get a bad burn on a CD, instead of tossing it right away, throw it in the microwave for 5 seconds. (It doesn't blow up, it just makes this REALLY cool effect.)
The price of this burner is floating around $250 right now. A great deal considering that just 2 years ago you'd be paying upwards of $350 for a 4-speed burner. With the advent of DVD, and DVD burners, you'll be seeing a lot of sweet burners sometime soon, I predict.
Until that time, however, I strongly recommend looking at this burner for all your backup and CD creation needs. It's quick, reliable and cheap. It rewrites at 10x so that is no longer a useless feature on this burner. Normally, most drives will re-write at something horrid, like 2x, which is a huge drop in performance compared to the 4 or 6 speed which it write at. 10x rewriting beats all nearly all other competitor's WRITE speed. This is the cream of the burner crop. If you're looking for a burning solution for your computer, look no further.
One caveat, though, make sure your blanks are 12x certified, otherwise you'll only be able to write at 8x on them. That really isn't all that much of a problem, a loss of 2 minutes or so, but if you don't know why it's going wrong, you may burn 4 or 5 frisbees, and just get frustrated.
Comes with Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 Lite.
