Battle of the PDA Environments
Dec 20 '99
Palm vs Windows CE has become quite a controversial topic. In an age where every user wants something portable, practical and yet durable and even more important - compatible, it is becoming increasingly difficult to decide on which environment will probably be the right choice for the end-user.
Let's see... Palm OS has some advantages... 1-Time to market (They introduced their technology to mainstream users before the CE environment was out). 2-Familiarity with commercial user (They market their products very well for the typical user with portability needs). 3-Form Factor (The devices that utilize Palm OS are usually smaller than the comparable Windows CE devices).
At the same time Windows CE has some advantages too... 1- Similarity to Microsoft's vast family of Operating Systems (CE has the same "look and feel" associated with Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT). 2- Large number of software solutions (There are an enormous amount of solutions written for the CE environment, and it's actually getting bigger by the minute). 3- Widespread adoption by industry (Hewlett-Packard, Compaq and NEC have a wide array of devices and solutions for corporate customers).
As we begin to evaluate Palm vs Windows CE, right now there might not be a huge difference in features of these devices (They both have color- screen devices, remote access features and offer nice PIM (Personal Information Manager) capabilities), but the trend is that more and more people (especially corporations) are standardizing on Windows CE as their future platform for user portability. Windows CE by a slight margin...
