Oh, NO -- NEC SuperScript 650C
Written: Sep 24 '99 (Updated Sep 24 '99)
Pros:Fancy appearance, Good price
Cons:Poor printhead ink detection, Excessive consumption of ink, print head may not be locally available, print quality is poor as compared with HP 710C, and Color printing is too slow.
I was did attracted by NEC Superscript 650C's truly fancy appearance and its super low price as compared to the same level product of 1200dpi 6/2ppm-- I bought it 6 month ago for only 110. Only after two and half month (I seldom used it, no more than 500 sheets -- one pack; and for most time, my printer setup is in speed/ink saving mode), its print driver popped up a message: "The black print head is out of ink, pls replace print head!". But, the immediate last printout is still clear enough to identify every detail of the page, just sort of fader than before. I try anyway I could figure out to let it work, however, it did not print out any single page after that.
I simultaneously have a HP710C Deskjet in my lab. I can always print out until the printhead is totally out of ink. I also did comparison of the print quality between HP710C and NEC 650C. I let both of them print Win95 printer-test page and a colorful Photo. The results is quite straightforward: HP710C presented much better color contrast and more nature photo, also for the print-test text output, HP710 yields crisp and good print-out, while the print-out of NEC 650C, I can NOT use word crisp for it. The dpi of HP 710C is only for 600*600, while NEC 650C is 1200*600. So DO NOT blindly trust the DPI, which may not deliver your expected resolution.
When I decided to get a new printhead, new problems came to me: I can't find NEC head at my local store, I can find lots kind of heads for HP, CANON and LEXMARK in Wal-Mart. Therefore, I have to resort to mail order, which means spending more money for shipping charge.
I finally made up mind to let it go via ebay. Here, I would like to remind the new buyer of printer to pay special attention to the print head: its life span, cost, is it locally available? You know, it is your future's BIG consumption. AND DO NOT BLINDLY seek high DPI. In my mind 600dpi is good enough. One more suggestion: trust EPINION, it is the TRUE experience from consumer. I also got some comparison from PC world before I bought NEC 650C, it did not give me the information I presented here, it did not give me the information on the printhead consumption. It even gave me the impression that NEC 650C brought new generation technology in its printhead. But the quality and cost-effectiveness is what we really care. EPINION is really a good reference for you, me and all honored consumer.
