Excellent Laptop

Pros:Solid laptop, quick, dependable
Cons:Minor hardware quirks

I purchased this laptop when I was looking to replace my Toshiba 225CDS.

I have nothing but praise for the laptop (and a couple minor complaints).

I purchased the laptop with the smaller screen and the display has been excellent. Lots of screen real estate, and crisp colors. The laptop is quite responsive, and I've had no problems running the latest software on it. (Even games, which are next to impossible on laptops run well on this and it's little 3D accelerator.) For the cross compatibility crowd, this runs Linux extremely well. The only drawback with Linux is that the modem does not work -- but drivers should be available soon. Also, if you don't insist on running the CD constantly, the battery life is respectable.

So, that's the good -- an extremely good laptop.

And my tiny list of complaints:

1. No IRDA port. My last laptop had a pretty good infared setup, and I was astonished to find that there was none on this model. It's something that's nice, but I can live without.

2. Sometimes, when doing something (noticable when dialing out with the internal modem), the system will freeze a bit when large amounts of data is being pushed out or when the modem dials. For example, when I was playing WinAmp, WinAmp would freeze and repeat the last .1 second of the song for about a second while the modem was initialized. Everything was normal after the dialing started up. This also happens when the modem is disconnecting.

3. Noisy CD-ROM. This CD-ROM is noisy and will vibrate the whole laptop as it seeks data. No biggie, but a little annoying at times.

Despite these things, this is a very solid laptop and if you're looking for a mid-high range laptop, don't look this over. Very solid and great value for the price.
