Ever had your child follow a link going for, lets say a downloadable song and all of a sudden there is a picture of a couple "going at it"? I have. Ever had your child in a "chat" room while you are watching, she is chatting with her friends and a stranger "whispers" her regarding a sexual act? I have. And I'm sick and tired of it.
I explained to my kids that there is give and take in everything, there is good and bad in most everything. Going for legal, downloadable songs is fine, but if you are exposed to a banner ad, advertising filth, then its not fine. Chatting with your friends is fine, but if you have to put up with perverts, its not fine.
My kids weren't happy, they were especially unhappy about the chat room being off limits. I decided to make sure temptation was out of reach and that many of the "unexpected" banner ads had less of a chance of showing up. I had tried a couple internet "monitoring" programs in the past and found them, reasonably priced but either a tad difficult to set up or they screwed something up while online forcing us to reboot.
Then I learned about We-Blocker. The absolute BEST thing about it is its free, the second best thing about it is its a piece of cake to set up.
It can block specific sites that you request. It blocks unseen sites based on words (if a certain word is on that web page it won't go there). You set up accounts for each child giving them a password. The program logs where they go and which sites were visited, which sites were blocked, you can easily review these logs and either add or delete sites to those being blocked. You can add words that you don't see any need for, such as XXX-SEX - I can't really see why my child would need to go to any site that had that anywhere on it.
Its very easy to configure, the developers give out updates for free. Its just one GREAT program if you are concerned about your kids. Try it, you'll love it.
