I've been using Panix as my ISP for a couple of years, and the extra cost has been worth it!
My 56K dial-up is $32.50 per month. The customer service is fantastic! I've never gotten a busy signal, rarely get cut off (even though I often leave my Mac connected for many hours at a time). They answer their phone and their e-mail without delay, and are great at answering questions about set-up, problems, etc. (for Mac or PC).
They also have a system of posting or, if you want, e-mailing updates whenever there's any problem with any part of the network, and then keep you up to date on exactly what, if any, effects you can expect, what's being done to fix any problem, and when you expect it to be done. But, I don't think I've even experienced any problems of any significance anyway.
My only complaint: no residential aDSL.
