I got yesterday in the situation where I needed to transfer my complete working environment from one machine to another. Both were Dell XPS xxx models, with the target being a T500.
After copying files, parts of the registry and more, my network connection did not work anymore.
To reinstall the driver, I had to identify the type of networking card + find the driver.
Normally I'd search for the invoice (it was gone because of an audit) and then go to 3COM's web site to download the latest drivers.
Not with Dell.
The machine has a tag with a 7-digit number on the body and since we did not exchange any components, there was a very easy way for me:
http://support.dell.com
I type in 7 digit number.
And - voila - it shows an exact description of my workstation, it even knows that it is still under warranty.
A long list of applicable driver and operating system updates/ hot fixes, Dell utilities.. it took me just a second to click on 'Network adapter drivers' and download the files. But I was REALLY IMPRESSED!
It saved me the time to find out what card was in my PC without opening it and it had a link to download the drivers right away! Cannot get better!
I used not to like Dell because I think they're expensive, but this support web site is a great idea. Obviously it only works as long as you do not change your PC by adding/ replacing your own components. Imagine we would have put in a different networking adapter
Ummm.. and.. yes there is another catch.. clearly.. I had to do this whole thing from a second machine :-) that had a connection to the internet.
