| marence's Full Review: Creative Labs 3D Blaster Banshee |
I usually don't buy fancy, overblown components for my PCs. When I rebuilt my system last summer, I splurged on a really cool video card - the Blaster Banshee - and hoped that I wouldn't regret spending twice as much as I needed to. See, I'm not a gamer, and spend about 2% or less of my time on my computer playing games of any kind. I was designing web pages full time back then, and using Photoshop and other image editors, as well as playing around with ray-tracing. I can say that I would spend that money willingly if I had it to do over.
The Blaster Banshee's 16mg of RAM makes all my image editing chores a pleasure. I used to wait 5 minutes for a complex filter to be applied - now it's only seconds. Ray-tracing takes approximately 1/10th the time. And the colors! My monitor is dazzling - even though I was using 16 million colors before, they are cleaner, clearer, and sharper with the addition of the Blaster Banshee.
The Blaster Banshee comes with a great set of tools - a color calibrator that anyone can use, and adds a number of new tabs to the Display Properties dialog box. You don't need to be a techie to set this up - after it's installed just follow the directions on the screen! Gamers will love the 3D graphics enhancement (and yes, I did go out and get a 3D game just to test it).
