| Joe_R's Full Review: Sony Spressa CD-RW (4X/2X/24X) |
I purchased my SONY Spressa CD-RW drive about 6 weeks ago, and I've been very happy with it. The installation itself was relatively easy, just plug in power, and the IDE cable. The installation software on the other hand was not very user friendly. It took me a minute to figure out what it was I was supposed to do to install the various packages that were included. But, once I got the software installed, I attempted to copy a CD..... I ran into a some problems with making copies at first, but with a little digging, I came up with the proper setup (both hardware and software) to make copies on the first try. The first thing I noticed is that it's not overly noisy. I've had a few "bargain basement" drives that are just down right annoying when they're running. It also appears to have some "substance" to it giving the impression of being well made.
As for my system, I configured the old CD-ROM drive sharing IDE-0 with the hard drive. The Sony drive is on IDE-1 by itself. This seemed to work, but I still could not get through a complete copy without a Buffer Underrun error. I finally turned Auto Insertion Notification (AIN) off on both drives, and now I can make a direct CD to CD copy in about 9 minutes.
I'm very happy with the performance of this drive. Things started out with a few problems, it works flawlessly now.
