Reliable products, low prices

I often hear people criticize eMachines, but I rather enjoy that company. I'll say from the beginning that I don't know what their customer service is like because I haven't had to use it. That fact, alone, ought to say something good about eMachines.

I purchased an eMachines a few months ago after my Pentium 200-MMX system, sadly, finally gave up the ghost. Have you ever heard s computer make those horrible little popping noises right before it went dead? I heard that loud and clear, the ol' monitor went black, and I knew it was time to get a new machine.

I found the eMachines 333cs on Buy.com, and bought it for around $290. That included shipping, folks, and isn't bad at all for a Pentium-class machine. In fact, I've always thought Pentiums are nice for people like me who can't afford better, but those with cash who can afford a real computer need to get an Apple.

There's no Intel inside my system, but I do have a 333 MHz AMD CPU, and it does the job fine. It came with Windows 98 and that horrible, horrible Microsoft Works suite, so the software that came built in was minimal.

The computer works fine, and works as eMachines said it would. The only complaint I have about it, really, is the sad little HSP MicroModem 56 that came installed. The modem is slow and too stupid to hang up the phone line when the connection is terminated. This means that I have to physically pull the phone cord from the modem, or it will leave the phone line open so that no one call my house and I can't call out, either. That's a terrible modem that eMachines chose to use but, hey, what else can you expect from a computer that cost less and $300?

So, my experience with eMachines has been positive. Everything works fine, and I had to add a larger hard drive (the 2.1 gig unit that came installed is just too small), more RAM (32 megs isn't enough these days) and a monitor, but I had that stuff laying around the house, anyway.

Like I said, I hear a lot of people gripe about eMachines, but I have nothing but good things to say about the company. They make bargain-priced units that work well, and that's all they ever claimed to do. If you want to spend some serious cash on a system, you ought to be shopping at Apple and leaving buggy, cranky Pentium systems alone, anyway. I haven't seen a Pentium system yet that looked good when placed next to a G4 Mac, and I wouldn't waste thousands of bucks for a sad little PC clone even if I had it to spend. Poor folks like me, though, are stuck with Bill Gates and Pentiums for the time being.
