As a computer fanatic, I have felt the need to always be on the cutting edge of technology. My computer friends tell me how much they've spent, how much they want to spend, and how the hardware they have is working. In a 3d accelerator what is desirable is good loading speed, crisp picture, smooth flow and above all, affordability. However, we tend to think that the more expensive a product is, the higher quality it is.
3dlabs oxygen ACX provides everything I want in a 3d accelerator. I can play games like quake 3 and half life, and even old classics like tomb raider and tribes in stunning clarity and depth, with almost no loading time. This piece of hardware does not drag my 500MHZ computer to a crawl as other 3d cards have done.
Although it may not be altogether cheap, if you compare it to better known names such as Voodoo and ATI, it is refreshing to the wallet. It is the best for the price among its 3dlabs permedia 2 oxygen sisters, offering not quite as good picture as the GVX1 but less of a cost. It also has less side effects than the GMX, making it more compatable with the OS of choice, windows 2000.
Its disadvantages are few. It is more likely to overheat than the Voodoo 3, meaning a cooler might be desirable, or you might just want to put it closer to the main fan. When it does overheat, the picture becomes a little foggy and slows down considerably.
All things considered, I would have to say that the Oxygen ACX is not the card of choice for someone with a fairly large budget for this typ of thing, but a very good buy for someone a little more money concious.
