| lovdbyGod7's Full Review: McAfee VirusScan |
To date, I have had no trouble with McAfee VirusScan. In fact, I got a very good deal on it.
I went to the Sam's Club and saw a 14 month old version of VirusScan for only $5, so I bought it. Inside, it had a coupon for a free online update of the software for 18 months. I went to the website, entered my code, and viola! here was the most recent version of VirusScan on my computer, a $50 value for one tenth that price. Not bad, huh?
But let me get back to the point. McAfee VirusScan doesn't have any bells and whistles that you can see when you start the program. It is simply an austere gray box that pops up, much like what you would see if you were using Windows 98's "find" feature. But behind this austere front, lies the ability to detect and remove tens of thousands of viruses, providing you with what is arguably the best virus detection program on the market.
Every month McAfee makes available for download a new virus data file, which you may download from their website and which allows VirusScan to detect and remove new viruses that have popped up since you last updated your data files. Simply go to their website, follow the instructions and links, click download and select where you want the files to be downloaded (desktop is the easiest). Once it has downloaded (about 15 minutes later), find the file and and open it. Viola! McAfee VirusScan is now able to protect your computer from the malicious bugs which have come out in the past month.
I have heard that attempting to uninstall McAfee VirusScan crashes your computer, and that you have to dig into the registry and system files to remove the program completely. I don't know about this, but VirusScan makes me feel that my computer is safe, and so I have no desire to try to uninstall it!
Lastly, the austere design of the program and lack of visual bells and whistles makes the software very user friendly. As I previously mentioned, I suggest familiarizing yourself with Windows "find" feature and you will have no problems using McAfee VirusScan.
