Choosing the right CD-ROM, DVD, and CDRW drive
Feb 08 '00
Nowadays there are so many different CD-ROM drives that you may not know what to get. I will discuss normal CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, and CDRWs.
1. A CD-ROM drive can play normal audio CDs and the computer CD-ROM's. They also can play playstation games if you obtain a special program online called bleem. This is the normal CD-ROM which comes with the majority of computers. When they mention a speed like 32X what that means is that this CD-ROM is 32 times faster than the first CD-ROM to come out. I would recommend a 32X CD-ROM or better.
2. I have a DVD drive and I absolutely love it. DVD-ROM drives have the ability to do everything that a normal CD-ROM drive can do plus play the DVDs which everyone is talking about now. This allows you to watch movies on your computer. Furthermore they are currently in the process of putting applications and information on DVDs. This would eliminate the need to have multiple disc applications or games. Furthermore if you get a TV card (see choosing the right accessory card) you can actually improve the quality that movies play on your computer or send what is on you screen to your TV, or watch TV on your computer. The possibilities are endless.
3. A CDRW drive is a drive which has the ability to write CDs. What this means is that you can store information, games or music on CDs that you make yourself. CDRWs are the hottest thing right now. Once again CDRWs can do everything a normal CD-ROM can do. They are terrific to have it is great to give yourself unlimited space by using this drive. Plus the CDs you record onto are cheap ($2 a piece). If you get one of these make sure you also get a normal CD-ROM drive or a DVD-ROM so that you can copy disc to disc. The numbers for speed are A X B X C. The A means the speed it writes at. The B is the speed it writes over previously existing information. The C is the normal reading speed of the drive. I suggest at least 4 X 2 X 24 for this drive.
I suggest getting a CDRW and a DVD if you can. The regular CD-ROM drive is unnecessary if you have these. Make sure you have enough room to expand when buying (see expansion article). This was the fifth opinion in a series.
