Mixed emotionsAug 01 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Whenever I talk to a people about their cable modems, I hear a lot of different things, some which go along with my experience and some that are the exact opposite. In the time that I have had my cable modem, I have not really had any problems at all. I have enjoyed the high speed access and the quick downloads, but many people I know haven't had the same success. If you are thinking about getting a cable modem, you are probably wondering if it is going to work for you. Well, I will make a few suggestions for you so maybe you can have a good experience. First off, not all cable modems are the same and the modems are install by local companies not a national chain. So what I am suggesting is to check the record of the company that will be installing your cable modem. If this company doesn't have a good track record, then I suggest you wait for them to get their act together or wait for DSL if you don't already have it in your area. Secondly, don't run a cable modem on a minimal system. Make sure your computer is easily above the minimum standards required for the cable modem. Next, I wouldn't install a cable modem on a system with Windows '95 because sooner or later, '95 is going to be upgraded and you run the risk of having problems with the setup of the modem. I know the modem works with '95 but looking in the long down the line, '98 is better. Finally, I have noticed that people who have modems that don't work, they have not uninstalled programs properly. If you don't uninstall the programs properly, you have the chance of deleted shared files that they cable modem uses. The cable modem is great for those who it works for. I think the errors come with the user, the system it is install on, and with the people who install it. So if you can avoid some of these problems, I think the modem will work for you.  |
