How's it going everyone!
In this review I explained about the MIRC; what it is, how to use it, and what are the advantages and disadvantages. If you already are a MIRC expert, maybe you should skip the couple first parts. For all the rest: Enjoy my review!
Well, here we go!
What is it?
MIRC is a global chat program, when you change texts with new/old friends.
You can find new and different people in the MIRC, and talk to them live, on any subject in the world. You can talk to people about politics, religion, sports and anything else you can think of.
It is not easy to learn how to use the program, so if you are a newbie, you should read the "help" file before you start using it.
How does it work?
The chat is divided into thousands of "rooms/channels". Each room has its own subject, so you can join only the rooms of your interests. You can make a list of your favorite rooms, so the program will join them automatically for you. You can be in as many "rooms" as you want.
As you join a "room", you'll find a list of all the people that are present in the room, (by nicknames), and a main chat screen.
When you put a message on the main screen, everyone in the room can see it, and respond to it.
You can also send a private message to a certain person in the room, and he will respond to you individually, when only you two can see the chat text. This is a good way to make some new friends.
Each "room" is controlled by channel operators, or "ops". Those people are in charge on the order in the room. They have the option to kick/ban/ignore users who are violating the room's rules (advertising, spamming, etc). They can also give ops' to other people who they trust, and then they can also control the room.
You can always open a new "room", and then you'll be the operator.
Other advantages
MIRC is the biggest online-chat program, so you can find more friends in more rooms over there.
If you want, you can also download or create "scripts". A script is an "upgrade" to your MIRC. It can give you some more cool options, like "war-mode" (If you want to do some "bad" stuff), "fun-actions" (Cool fonts, ASCII based pictures, etc), Games, E-mail access, and lots more neat things.
A great script I'm using is called "ShowDown", that has all of the options above, and more. You can download it at: http://www.sci.fi/~showdown/index.htm
You can also send and receive files thorough the program, but don't EVER get files from strangers, because those people are often trying to hack to your computer (If you aren't receiving files you shouldn't be worried from hackers, because they can't break to your computer).
Try not to make enemies, just for safety reasons….
Some Disadvantages
Lots of people are using the MIRC for spamming, advertising and more. It can really ruin your fun when you keep getting harassments from people who want you to visit their web-site.
It can sometimes be not appropriate to younger children, because there are lots of people who are using bad language, which the operators can't control. This too depends on the room you are in.
Women keep getting sexual harassments from perverts, so I would suggest all of the women, not to show by their nicknames that they are females.
It is hard to learn how to use the MIRC. You should read all the "help" sections before you start, even if you know your ways in computers. I did this mistake (not reading the "help" files) myself, and it took me a lot of time I could have spared, by learning it by myself.
Once again - The MIRC is often used as a hacking tool, so don't EVER get files from people you don't know, because they are potential hackers.
In conclusion
The MIRC can be a fun and educational place to EVERYONE, if you can find the channels you want to be in.
I go to the MIRC for almost everything that is important to me, including checking sports results, discuss daily things and socialize with people (I even dated a gal once thanks to the MIRC).
You should consider before letting your children get into the MIRC, and maybe even check it yourself and find some appropriate rooms for them, but this is important to do so, because this is an attraction you don't want to miss!
