Difference? There might be....
Written: Jul 14 '00
Nvidia has continued its breakneck speed of enhancing and releasing new video chips. The geForce 2 is supposed to be a marked improvement over the geForce 1, well this may be true technically it is hard to notice.
The reason I am having trouble telling the difference is I upgraded from the geForce 1 card. Being able to go from 90 to 110 frames per second in Quake3 may make some gamers drool, but you would be hard pressed to find someone who could easily spot the difference. If you want to upgrade from an older video card you will definitely notice a difference.
So, Should you upgrade?
Think about the following:
1. What speed is your current processor? If you don't have at least a pIII-700mhz or higher, I would highly recommend getting the geForce 1.
2. If you do have a fast processor & own an older video card then splurge if you can afford it.
The voodoo 3 is still a fast video card for todays games.
No game on the market takes full advantage of all of the geForce's features. The real advantage of having the geForce 2 is being able to run today's games at Max resolution and keeping it above 30 frames per second.
Good
Very Fast, supports high resolution modes at good frame rates, tv-out via s-vhs cable (includes rca cable adapter), HDTV playback (if it ever becomes popular), superior color clarity, overclocking ability (for you speed freaks), Superior DVD playback, and DVD playback software.
Bad
No games included, very high price, may not notice a difference if upgrading from geForce 1
Recommendation
Most computers bought in the last 18 months have respectable 3D cards included. Only purchase this card if you are looking to upgrade from a really old (>24 months) video card and have the processor to support it, otherwise look to pick up the geForce 1 (eBay has been flooded with them).
Note You need a pII-233mhz cpu and AGP video slot to use this card.
