If you're reading this now and are questioning whether or not to buy this particular cd-burner you can feel free to skip the rest of this review and go right out to your retailer-of-choice and purchase the veloCD burner.
The installation instructions were very clear and concise. The software bundle (which a month later I still haven't completely explored) is excellent. The hardware works flawlessly (and it's even a pretty shade of blue). To say I'm very happy with the veloCD burner is an understatement.
Installation : I'll be honest, upon first glancing at the installation instructions for the veloCD my palms began to sweat and my heart began to race. However, I took my time and followed step by step and the cd-burner was installed in my computer and working fine. I won't lie and say that installation is a breeze and even my mom could do it without a problem, but the instructions were very clear and easy to follow for someone with at least a minor knowledge of computer hardware.
Software : For as long as I've been burning cds, I've always used Adaptec's EZCD Creator to do all of my burning. Well, it's lucky for me that EZCD wouldn't recognize the veloCD when I tried to burn my first cd, because it forced me to use the included NERO 5.0 for the first time. Well, suffice it to say, Nero blows EZCD away in terms of ease of use, ability to burn cds to ANY specification and interface. The other software included with the veloCD seems nice - cd ripping, mp3 maintenance through a jukebox program, etc. however I have yet to fully explore these programs. As far as I can tell, Nero is the best program on the market for burning cds so its inclusion in the software bundle allows me to grade the bundle an "A" without even trying the other software.
Other : Moving from a 4X cd burner to this 12X burner is like switching from a Hyundai to a Porsche. I've burned full audio and data cds in about 5 minutes and have yet to make a coaster (to the dismay of my three year old daughter who likes playing with all the bad disks I burned with my last burner). They even give you a nifty little black permanent marker to write on the flawless cds you burn with the burner.
Overall the price, reliability and features of the veloCD cd-burner make this perhaps the best upgrade I've ever purchased for a computer.
